چکیده

We present a new multimodal system that combines stereoscopic and audio-based source localization to track the position of a flying bat. Also presented are novel algorithms for audio source localization. The bat was allowed to fly in an anechoic room and monitored by two high-speed video cameras. The vocalizations of the bat were simultaneously recorded from six microphones. The data was then processed offline to localize the source and reconstruct the trajectory of the bat. We compare the performance of the localization algorithm with the position data obtained from steroscopic pictures of the bat. The results confirm that the stereoscopic analysis and the audio localization are in good agreement. This system opens up new possibilities for performing multimodal research, and developing more tightly integrated algorithms.

The role of the external ear in vertical sound localization in the free flying bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The role of the external ear in sonar target localization for prey capture was studied by deflecting the tragus of six big brown bats, Eptesicus fuscus. The prey capture performance of the bat dropped significantly in the tragus-deflection condition, compared with baseline, control, and recovery conditions. Target localization error occurred in the tragus-deflected bat, and mainly in elevation....

Multimodal Integration: Visual Cues Help Odor-Seeking Fruit Flies

Olfactory stimuli are uniquely devoid of directional information, so that multimodal cues are typically required for their localization. A clever new experimental paradigm with flying Drosophila has shown that accurate heading into an odor plume requires panoramic visual cues.

Timing matters: sonar call groups facilitate target localization in bats

To successfully negotiate a cluttered environment, an echolocating bat must control the timing of motor behaviors in response to dynamic sensory information. Here we detail the big brown bat's adaptive temporal control over sonar call production for tracking prey, moving predictably or unpredictably, under different experimental conditions. We studied the adaptive control of vocal-motor behavio...

Screening of Bat Carers for Antibodies to Equine Morbillivirus

In response to a recent finding of antibodies reactive with equine morbillivirus in four species of flying foxes, people who had close association with flying foxes were tested for antibodies to the virus. One hundred and twenty-eight bat carers were tested, none of whom had detectable antibodies. As people who had regular contact with flying foxes were targeted in this study, the majority of t...

Rapid frequency control of sonar sounds by the FM bat, Miniopterus fuliginosus, in response to spectral overlap

In the presence of multiple flying conspecifics, echolocating bats avoid jamming by adjusting the spectral and/or temporal features of their vocalizations. However, little is known about how bats alter their pulse acoustic characteristics to adapt to an acoustically jamming situation during flight. We investigated echolocation behavior in a bat (Miniopterus fuliginosus) during free flight under...
